WHIRLPOOL GALAXY
31.000.000 light years

M51 / NGC5194 & NGC5195

The view right onto the plain of this Galaxy shows clearly the winding spiral arms, areas of intense star formation. Not all galaxies are shaped like this: There are different kinds of spirals, elliptic and perfectly round galaxies, bizarre shapes, which may be the result of cosmic collisions – just like the small patchy galaxy which appears to be located at the end of one of the spiral arms.
